Works Cited

This is a comprehensive guide to all sources cited in this volume. Annotation in this volume has been documented with primary sources where possible and practical. Secondary sources of sound scholarship that distill several primary sources or provide useful general context are also used in annotation. Newspapers are listed under the titles they bore in the period relevant to this volume.

Sources cited in this volume are referred to on first and subsequent occurrences by a conventional shortened citation. For convenience, some documents are referred to by editorial titles rather than by their original titles or by the titles given in the catalogs of their current repositories, in which case the list of works cited provides the editorial title followed by full bibliographic information. A logical consistency of punctuation and capitalization has been applied to catalog and collection titles. Call numbers have been provided for the archival collections as a convenience for the reader or researcher.

The volume contains a significant number of references to the Joseph Smith Papers Project, both its print and online offerings. Joseph Smith鈥檚 papers are contemporary with the content of this volume and provide a tremendous cache of textual and contextual information and data for understanding early Latter-day Saint history as well as nineteenth-century American religion and history. The transcripts provided by the Joseph Smith Papers are considered primary sources, and this volume has benefited from the remarkable research and findings by scholars of that project. Citing to the Joseph Smith Papers is indicated by an editorial title followed by a shorthand such as 鈥JSP, D1:121鈥 to indicate the series name, the volume number within that series, and the relevant page number(s). Full publication information for Joseph Smith Papers print volumes appears in this works cited section. Citing to a resource on the Joseph Smith Papers website simply cites to a URL within josephsmithpapers.org.

Found in this volume are numerous references to works accepted as scripture by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The church鈥檚 current scriptural canon consists of the King James Version of the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price. Scripture citations in this volume contain the book or section name with modern chapter and verse numbers for the reader鈥檚 convenience.
