The vision of the three degrees of glory was revealed in conjunction with Joseph Smith’s revision of John 5:29 with Sidney Rigdon as scribe. The Prophet and his scribe testified that the revised wording in the verse “was given unto” them, and this image shows the process. Joseph Smith dictated “resurrection of life.” He then changed it to “resurrection of the just,” but not immediately, because Rigdon inserted the revision above the line after he had already written more text. In contrast, after the Prophet dictated “resurrection of damnation,” he had Rigdon cross out the word “damnation” and write “the unjust” directly on the line to replace it. The two men reported, “While we meditated upon these things, the Lord touched the eyes of our understandings and they were opened, and the glory of the Lord shone round about” (Doctrine and Covenants 76:15, 19).
